It sounds like your son does have a problem with urinary incontinence and needs protection at least some of the time. You tried different brands of disposables, but have you tried imported brands like Molicare or Abena that are only available online or by mail order? They are far more absorbent than anything you can buy in a store. Your son’s use of diapers has escalated from bedtime to trips and family visits, and his teacher is now recommending that he wear them to school. At that rate it won’t be long until he is in diapers full time. There is a tendency for some people that need protection part of the time to use it when it isn’t really needed because it makes them feel more secure. Someone who has frequent accidents doesn’t know when and where the next one will happen and would rather be protected than embarrassed. Since he will be tested after Christmas it might be best to wait until you have results to take any further action, but I would look for ways to reduce the dependence on diapers. For instance, don’t use them at home where toilets are readily available, encourage him to use the toilet often. Cloth diapers and plastic pants may be needed at night but would a pull-up like Goodnights work during the day? He could still use the toilet but have the diaper in case he didn’t make it in time. Cloth diapers and plastic pants are an invitation to use the diaper since most 10 year olds can’t get it off and back on without help. As far as messing is concerned, most people are fairly regular about when they have bowel movements, and he should be encouraged to go around his regular time whether he feels the need to or not. And hopefully, you can avoid having him in a diaper at that time of day.
