Laura, I think many parents have faced the same dilemma that you are confronted with. On the one hand, if you discontinue your son's nappies, but he is still unable to regain nighttime bladder control while he is asleep, then you both are back in the situation where he has to sleep in and then wake up lying in a cold wet smelly bed, and you have increased laundry to do. But on the other hand, you find yourself wondering whether his use of nappies will prolongue they day when he is able to be dry at night again. You have already received a couple of suggestions. Here is a third: talk to him about using one of the alarm conditioning systems that are on the market. They don't work for some people, but they do for others. Have him give it an honest try for a few months. If it doesn't work, you'll know he isn't ready yet. You can resume the nappies, knowing that he really still needs them to be able to sleep comfortably and save on the wash. After another period of time, if he is still wetting in his sleep, you could try the alarm system again. But I would not simply discontinue his nappies without being ready to substitute some other intervention plan in its place.
