I'm a Special Ed teacher, and want to add some advice on the ADD/ADHD. First of all, they are not the same (I've seen both). An ADD child can't concentrate on the same thing for more than a few minutes (and at times second). Think of a teen-ager having the attention span of a four-year-old. They may, or may not have behavior problems at school. ADHD is more like a humming bird on speed. They just can't stay still (and always have behavior problems at school, as well as problems with peers). Even without testing, look into other ways to help. These include diet (I have kids so hopped up on candy that they are emotional wrecks by lunch), and sleep deprivation. They actually get worse when they are tired. As far as the school drugging kids. Schools have ZERO ability to put a child on drugs. A lot of school psych's will urge parents to have it checked by a pediatrician, who know absolutely zip about education. Frankly I've seen cases where kids start using drugs and having it help, but I would make sure I knew what was happening. It is very important to get the right dose, because that will make all the difference.
